Rennes School of Business is looking for Post-Doctoral researchers to join its Areas of Excellence hosted in its Research Lab and to be part of a team of researchers, as from September 2021.

Call for post-doctoral research position in AI Driven Business

AI Driven Business Area of Excellence is one of first research center in Europe dedicated to produce excellence research in addition to pedagogic innovation, related to the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on business practice.

The center was founded in 2018 and regroups 14 professors that are organized into three clusters:

· Human and ethical AI
· AI strategies for firms’ competitive advantage
· AI for operations efficiency and optimization

Our members published their research in top tier journals, and we are looking for candidates to support and enrich the research in the center. More precisely, we are welcoming applications that address the following questions:

· Human and Ethical AI
o How consumers adopt and use AI powered products/services?
o How AI can be leveraged to engage with consumers more effectively?
o What are future implications of AI for businesses, individual workers and societal fairness?
o AI promises gains in productivity and reduction of human error by replacing certain non-routine and cognitive tasks. Still, what are social and environmental concerns relevant to business managers and policy makers?

· AI Strategies for Firms’ Competitive Advantage
o How AI impacts businesses and their strategies and policies?
o How the rise of AI changes the ways firms obtain and sustain their competitive advantages?
o How AI reshapes innovation processes and the organization of corporate R&D management?
o How AI enables venture creation, innovation, and organizational change?
o How can AI influence and redefine strategic decision processes related to innovation?

· AI for Operations Efficiency and Optimization
o How can AI offer new opportunities to deal with challenges in operations and project management?
o What determines firms’ adoption and deployment of AI tools for project management?
o How computational intelligence approaches of AI can support decision making under uncertainty?

Characteristics of the post-doctoral research position

  • 18 months French law work contract
  • 30K euros /year contract (paid vacation, retirement, health insurance)

  • Expectation for publication of 3 papers

For visa issue, postdoc will get a specific hosting agreement (“convention d’accueil”).

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible, post-doc candidates should hold a PhD (or are close to completion) in in Management, Economics, or other related social science discipline. In case the candidate does not have a PhD degree by the date of their submission, they should present a letter from their supervisor certifying that they will obtain their Ph.D. by the 31st of August 2021, at the latest.

English proficiency shown by a recent (2 years’ maximum) TOEFL (equivalent 110 IBT minimum) or IELTS (7.5 overall score with >/=7 in all 4 sections). The TOEIC is not accepted.

Candidates should have a clear research interest and track record in studying the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on business practice, ideally combined with an interest in or experience of research into big data analytics and AI/Machine learning techniques.

Candidates are expected to possess strong conceptual and analytical skills, preferably with experience of using both qualitative and quantitative methods and have a commitment to research excellence.

The successful applicant will also be expected to be able to manage time, resources, data, and details of multiple tasks. The ideal candidate will be thinking of this position as a platform to build skills towards taking on a research professorship in the future.

Evaluation criteria

The Assessment Committee will focus on the scientific quality of the application and on the post-doctoral research project. Five criteria will be used in evaluating candidates: CV, quality of research, feasibility of the project, interview, and presentation of the job market paper and research project.

The selection will have two phases:

  • Phase I: The Recruitment Committee will shortlist applicants based on their research experience, the quality of their research (approach, methodology, results), the complementarity between their research proposal and the research interests and expertise of the area of excellence.
  • Phase II: Interviews with the shortlisted candidates will be organized. Candidates will be evaluated on their presentation and communication skills, on the appropriateness of their workplan to achieve the objectives of the project, on their ability to attract collaborative partners (academia/industry).

All applicants will be notified of their status in the recruitment process shortly after the application deadline. The applicants selected for assessment will be notified about the composition of the Recruitment Committee and later in the process about the result of the assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed, each applicant will be notified of the outcome of their application.

About the positions

Due to its strong growth, Rennes School of Business (Rennes SB) has multiple permanent faculty positions open at the Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor level in the areas of Finance, Accounting and International Business, Marketing, Organizational Behavior, Organizational Theory, Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship, Supply Chain Management and Information System.

Start date is Sept 2021. More senior candidates – with a minimum of experience of several years in research and teaching after their PhD – are particularly encouraged to apply. Appointments will be made at the rank consistent with research and teaching records.
Our focus is on producing high-quality research that is impactful both for the academic and the practitioner communities. Although all quality research is encouraged and welcome, our research is mainly organized around four main Areas of Excellence hosted in our Research.Lab and for which the positions are open :

1. The Agribusiness Area of Excellence focuses on agribusiness, sustainable development, and CSR in order to contribute to a local and international food system sustainable development. (Ref: AG20)

2. The AI-driven Business Area of Excellence focuses on intelligence, data-driven global business, aiming to understand the advantages of AI applied to business and how firms can transform to implement these new techniques. (Ref: AI20)

3. The Green, Digital & Demand-Driven Supply Chain Management (G3D) Area of Excellence focuses on supply chain, operations management and information technology dealing with green and digital supply chain management, business value of information technology, and matching supply with demand. 4. The mïnd Area of Excellence focuses on the mind-challenging activities required to effectively cope with complexity and generate innovation and creativity in an entrepreneurial setting (Ref: MD20)

About the candidates

  • Doctoral degree in a business-related field from an internationally recognized institution (e.g., EQUIS, AMBA, AACSB). High-potential candidates who are close to completion will also be considered;
  • Publication record (or high publication potential) in high quality international peer-reviewed research journals in management
  • Willingness to contribute to the development and growth of the School
  • Ability to deliver quality classes in English in the discipline one is hired for. Prior knowledge of French is not required

The deadline for submission of the full application package is September 15. Screening of applications will start shortly thereafter and will continue until the positions are filled.
